What has lockdown taught you? #GuestBlogger (@johnstonemolly)

I believe that there is a lesson to be learnt from every experience, good or bad. Now before that day comes that we’re all dying for, when we get ‘set free’, let’s take one last chance to be quiet and still, and reflect on this crisis that will change our lives forever. Once lockdown gradually starts to end, and you feel yourself starting to regret not utlising your time better, just remember, it’s not too late.

I’m sure each and every one of you has had a completely different experience of COVID-19, whether that’s rinsing Disney+ (guilty), battling with children daily, or just feeling pretty lonely. For all those directly affected by the virus, or knows anyone that has, my thoughts go out to you and I can’t begin to imagine how you feel! Of course this will affect the way we all come out of this pandemic, but everyone has the ability to reflect on it and be positive. I read something that said ‘if you find this torture, then find out why’ and that really stuck with me. It made me think about all the things that I enjoy doing, for me.

I think a really important step in life is to start figuring out who you are and what you want to do. Being self-aware. Now this means understanding your behaviour and strengths, knowing what you like and dislike and what you’re interested in. Once you start to discover yourself as a person it’s an amazing feeling. From there, it’s almost like a domino effect, you start to get more involved in things you like, start to meet new people, possibly move to new places. You start to realise that nothing is impossible if you truly believe in yourself.

I began to realise this when I got my first ‘proper’ job which I landed at Google, at the age of 18, straight out of college. Around a year ago I found out I got accepted into an apprenticeship scheme in London with the giant American cooperation, and that was a real turning point in my life that told me I am capable of achieving whatever I want. And from being in this role, I have learnt that there will always be times where you think you’ve reached your best, or maybe you’re at your worst. Maybe you feel like you’re not sure where to go next or feel like there’s too much that you want to learn. This is life, and it lasts forever. I have learnt that it’s all about mindset, and to not see these feelings as problems but more so opportunities to be excited about. You may have no idea where your life is going, but isn't that exciting?

As this lockdown period slowly comes to an end, reflect on your time and what you have learnt about yourself. If there’s things you wish you would have done more of, it’s never too late to implement them. Think about the things you want but haven’t yet achieved, did you really want it enough? Lockdown isn’t a ‘grace’ period where the universe let us catch up with life, it was a global pandemic, so don’t be too hard on yourself. But now is where you can really make the difference. As life starts to get back to ‘normal’, think about the things you want to change, or even just continue and make the most of. I hope this time has helped you figure out what makes YOU happy, because that is what will truly drive you forward in life.
