BATTLE OF THE DUPES #61: Aldi (Inspired Cuisine) vs. Itsu

I love the vegetable gyozas from Itsu so when I saw Aldi has some I had to see if they were dupes.

INGREDIENTS.(Aldi):

Vegetables (49%) (Cabbage, Carrot, Potato, Water Chestnuts, Shiitake Mushrooms), Wheat Flour, Water, Coriander, Spinach, Soy Sauce (Water, Soya Beans, Wheat Flour, Salt), Fully Refined Soybean Oil, Sesame Oil, Garlic, Sugar, Corn Starch, Modified Tapioca Starch, Salt, Ground White Pepper


INGREDIENTS.(Itsu):

Gyoza Filling (Vegetables (37%) [Carrot, Leek, Spring Onion, White Onion, Cabbage], Water, Tofu [Soya Beans, Water], High Protein Soya Mince*, Sweet Potato Starch Noodles, Corn Oil, Soy Sauce [Soya Beans, Wheat, Water, Salt, Alcohol], Sesame Oil, Sugar, Seasoning Oil [Rapeseed Oil, Onion Powder, Antioxidant: Tocopherol-Rich Extract; Onion Oil], Ginger, Garlic, Soya Protein, Salt, Soy Seasoning [Soya Beans, Yeast, Salt, Wheat Gluten, Maltodextrin, Yeast Extract, Dextrin, Vinegar], Black Pepper), Gyoza Skin (Wheat Flour, Water, Wheat Gluten, Salt)

HOW TO.(Aldi):

MICROWAVE: (From frozen, based on half a pack)

  1. Place gyozas on a microwavable plate and sprinkle with cold water.

  2. Cover with film. Microwave on full power (750W) for 2 minutes 40 seconds / (850W) for 2 minutes 20 seconds / (1000W) for 2 minutes.

  3. Ensure product is thoroughly cooked and piping hot throughout.

  4. Do not reheat.


FRYING PAN:

  1. Preheat non-stick frying pan with 1tsp of oil on low/medium heat.

  2. Remove required amount from packaging, add to the frying pan and cook for 5 minutes, turning frequently.

  3. Carefully add 4 tbsp of cold water, cover with any lid and cook for another 5 minutes until all the water evaporates.

  4. Ensure product is thoroughly cooked and piping hot throughout.

  5. Do not reheat


HOW TO.(Itsu):

Hob: From Frozen

  1. Gently simmer

  2. Add gyoza to pan of simmering water [do not boil].

  3. Simmer for 3-4 mins then drain.


Microwave: From Frozen

  1. Place gyoza in microwaveable bowl & add 2 tbsp of cold water.

  2. Cover with microwavable cling film, pierce & microwave for 2 1/2 mins on full power [900W].

  3. Leave to stand for 1 min then drain.


Shallow fry: From Frozen

Pan cook [authentic Japanese style]

  1. Pre-heat pan with 1 tsp of oil on low/medium heat.

  2. Add gyoza & cook for 4 mins.

  3. Carefully add 4 tbsp of cold water, cover with any lid and cook for another 4 mins until all the water evaporates.


Steam: From Frozen

  1. Place colander/sieve above pan of boiling water.

  2. Place gyoza in colander/sieve, cover with any lid & steam for 6 mins.

I decided to do them in the microwave and they both tasted amazing but they were not the same, I have since mixed them and had them as a dish, I think I will be purchasing them both again to mix but if I could only buy one it would be the Itsu, they taste nicer.


Is it a dupe: No but both tasty
